After people actually stood in the street to watch the LED’s last year, I figured I would kick it up a notch, plus address some issues I had with how the original code worked. The inner workings are radically better than before, last year I just threw together a bunch of things that looked cool, this year I wrote a nice core to manage everything and gives more flexibility. For all of my development I worked on the Uno and 40 LED’s I had laying around, but I ended up needing to switch to the Mega for the additional memory on the actual house setup since it’s 100 LED pixels.
The new system is all time-based, so the effects all go at whatever their individual animation rate is, regardless of the Arduino’s speed or CPU load. I also implemented a transition engine, so you’ll actually see that it does transition effects between each animation. Currently it has 6 transitions, and I just randomly switch between them – this has the upside that it makes the whole thing look more dynamic and interesting. Another advantage of the time-based approach is I can have each animation going for some set amount of time (30 seconds), instead of a certain number of loops, which was painful with the color drop animation before.
One other cool thing it has the ability to do, but is not currently being used in any meaningful way is that the transition can have a third effect as the leading edge of the transition. In all of transitions I just have it using white as the leading edge effect, but I plan to do something cool with it next year.
