On this episode we’re going to talk about lowering the water in your pool when you close it? How far down should you drain it? Do you even need to lower the water level?
There’s a lot of opinions out there, but after a ton of research and weighing out the options, I’ve got the answer!
Kevin sent me an email and asked…
There seems to be a difference of opinion on how far down one should take the water level when winterizing an in-ground (plaster) pool? Middle of the tile? To the bottom of the tile? Below the tile – how are far below?
The “Lowering the water level” debate is all about freezing and cracking of the skimmer.
If you have an inground pool, you must blow out the pipes. If you don’t want to do it yourself, hire a professional to do it for you. Make sure you property plug the return jets and install a Gizmo in your skimmer to protect it from cracking.
If you have an above ground pool, make sure you remove the hose from your skimmer so it can drain properly and install a winter skimmer cover plate.
If you do these things, you don’t have to drain your pool.
However, If you have a tile border in your pool, you should drain it at least 4″ below the tile to protect it.
Keeping the water level normal will be better for your winter cover.
In the last episode my bonus tip was all about using a gizmo to protect your skimmers from cracking under the pressure of ice expansion.
Well, if you can’t find a gizmo, you can use an empty 2-liter soda bottle with the cap on. If you use one, you still need to plug up the skimmer.
Again, always make sure your lines are blown out (or hoses are removed), and the skimmer and return lines are all plugged up.

An LED light bulb that does not look like a pile of plastic! How refreshing. It looks like a normal glass light bulb but buried inside is an interesting blend of ceramics, glass, circuit boards and LEDs. Wanglo Enterprises, model #LEDA19
